The Power of the Therapeutic Alliance

In a 2019 study led by Jennifer Dore, patients experienced significantly decreased depression & anxiety scores (HAM-A &  BDI at p<0.0001) in private practice setting with a licensed mental health professional vs. receiving ketamine alone. Explore the research article here.

Ketamine and the Brain

Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take  effect within 1-2 hrs. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors  as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What medical services do you offer?

We offer a range of psychiatric services to meet patient needs, including psychiatric medication management, psychotherapy, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for eligible patients. Our psychiatric medication management program includes complete management of all  psychiatric medications, on-demand access to our medical team, a  personalized mental health treatment plan, an in-depth initial medical  intake, and regularly scheduled medical check-ins and outcome monitoring. In addition, we offer psychotherapy of many different modalities through our extensive network of trained psychotherapists, including EMDR, Couples Therapy, IFS, and many more.

Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy safe?

Since its inception, Journey Clinical has designed its business around a patient-centered collaborative care model with rigorous patient safety policies and procedures in place to safeguard patient health and support their journeys toward improved clinical outcomes. Read about our commitment to patient safety and wellbeing here

How does ketamine feel?

The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subside, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.

What determines patient eligibility?

Patient eligibility is up to the sole discretion of Journey Clinical’s KAP-trained medical team. We currently only work with patients over the age of 18 who reside in one of our states. Assess your eligibility and get matched with a therapist in your state for treatment here.

What modes of KAP does Journey Clinical support?

At Journey Clinical, all patients are required to be in a therapeutic  alliance with a licensed mental health professional member. Within the context of this therapeutic alliance, we support a variety of KAP modalities, including in-person KAP, remote KAP, group KAP and self-led  KAP.

What is the cost of KAP treatment?

First Time KAP Patients:

• Medical treatment: total cost of initial evaluation, treatment plan, and medication for up to 2 sessions: $338*. May be eligible for partial insurance coverage depending on your plan.

• Psychotherapy cost: dependent on KAP practitioner and modality. Depending on the practitioner, psychotherapy may be partially or fully covered by insurance.

Ongoing KAP Treatment:

• Medical treatment: Total cost of 6 additional treatments $298*. May be eligible for partial insurance coverage depending on your plan.

• Psychotherapy cost: Depending on the practitioner, psychotherapy may be partially or fully covered by insurance. Read about our commitment to patient safety  and well-being here.‍

What is the cost of Medication Management?

The cost of our Psychiatric Medicine Management program is $250* for the initial medical appointment, and then $150* per monthly appointment afterwards (you will be responsible for any medication costs). Depending  on your provider, these visits may be covered in part or in full by insurance.

If you're already enrolled in KAP, your follow-up appointments will cover both KAP and Psychiatric Medication Management. The cost will be $335* for the initial medical appointment, and $295*  for any follow up in which both KAP and your traditional medications are assessed.

*with upfront cash bundling discount applied

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! We currently accept the following insurance plans for medical consultation:

• Aetna, New York

• Aetna, California

• Anthem Blue Cross, California

• Blue Cross Blue Shield, Massachusetts

Psychotherapy is paid separately; depending on the practitioner and your insurance psychotherapy may be partially or fully covered by insurance. If you have insurance, your medication management visits may be partially or fully covered or not covered at all. Depending on your insurance plan,  you may be responsible for related costs, including copay or deductible, or payment of non-covered services.

Patients are responsible for verifying and understanding their eligibility and coverage responsibility. To learn more about insurance coverage, visit our Insurance FAQs.

How does the therapist matching process work?

You first will complete your patient on-boarding process, including giving your therapist preferences. Journey Clinical's patient matching team then finds at least 3 therapists based on your preferences who would be a good fit. You can then meet with the therapists and select one to begin KAP with.

How is the KAP delivered?

At Journey Clinical, ketamine is prescribed as sublingual lozenges to be taken orally in order to be more accessible and cost effective.

Who is not a good fit for KAP?

Not everyone is a good fit for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. A few common medical contraindications include:

• Uncontrolled hypertension / high blood pressure

• Uncontrolled glaucoma/ pressure in the eye

• Acute mania or mixed state

• Unstable medical condition

• Severe breathing problems

• History of primary psychotic disorder

• Ketamine allergy or sensitivity

• Active Ketamine use disorder

If you are not sure whether you are a good fit for KAP,  you may book a holistic psychiatric intake session with our clinical team, where you will be assessed for both Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy and traditional medication management.
